As a public speaker and presenter, one of the challenges I constantly face is managing and accessing a large volume of multimedia files, presentations, and documents. Cloud storage is convenient but can come with limitations — especially when dealing with large video files or when secure access and control over data are paramount. This led me to consider building my own home server. In this guide, I’ll take you through the journey of setting up my first home server, the lessons I learned, and the benefits it has brought to my work.

Why Build a Home Server?

The primary motivation for building a home server as a public speaker is to have centralized, secure, and fast access to resources. Here are some key benefits I identified before starting the project:

  1. Centralized Storage: Access all files, presentations, and videos in one place.
  2. Enhanced Security and Privacy: Unlike cloud services, I have full control over my server’s security.
  3. Cost-Efficiency: Once the initial investment is made, there are no recurring subscription fees.
  4. Offline Access: Access my resources even without an internet connection.
  5. Customization: Tailor the server’s functionalities to my exact needs, such as remote access, backups, and file sharing.
