Introduction

The Dark Web has long been associated with illicit activities, cybercrime, and a hub for anonymity-driven communications. While it does contain legitimate uses, the underground marketplaces, hacking forums, and illicit services make it a major concern for law enforcement agencies worldwide. Dark Web forensics is the field dedicated to investigating, tracking, and analyzing activities on these hidden networks. With the rapid advancement of technology, the future of Dark Web forensics is evolving to keep up with criminals who are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This blog will explore the current role of Dark Web forensics, its challenges, methodologies, and future developments in the field.

Understanding the Dark Web

The internet is divided into three layers:

  1. Surface Web — The part of the internet that is indexed by search engines and accessible to anyone.
  2. Deep Web — Webpages that require authentication, such as private databases, academic journals, and subscription-based content.
  3. Dark Web — Encrypted networks that require specific tools like Tor (The Onion Router) to access. This layer hosts forums, marketplaces, and services that often involve illegal transactions.
