Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) is a term used to describe any visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct involving a minor. This includes photographs, videos, digital images, and other visual media. CSAM represents a severe violation of human rights and is recognized as a criminal offense in most jurisdictions worldwide. The production, distribution, possession, and consumption of such material perpetuates cycles of abuse and exploitation, causing lasting harm to the victims depicted and to society as a whole.

Why the Term CSAM Matters

The terminology used to describe this material is critical. Historically, terms like “child pornography” were used, but these terms have been widely criticized for being misleading and minimizing the abuse involved. “Pornography” often implies consent, which is impossible for children. CSAM, on the other hand, accurately reflects the abusive and exploitative nature of the material. By adopting this terminology, law enforcement agencies, policymakers, and advocacy groups emphasize the criminal and abusive aspects of this content.
