1. What Exactly is an IP Address?

Definition and Purpose
An IP address, or Internet Protocol address, is a unique string of numbers assigned to each device connected to a computer network. Think of it as the internet’s version of a mailing address. Just as your home address tells the post office where to deliver your mail, your IP address tells the internet where to send the data you’ve requested.
